Valentine's Day art projects can be educational and fun.

Few days in elementary school rival the excitement of Valentine's Day. A classroom full of children exchanging cards and candy is the perfect setting for fun and creative art projects. With a few basic supplies, teachers can create educational and interesting art projects that will keep students engaged even through the most exciting Valentine's Day party.

  1. Popsicle Stick Frame

    • In order to do this project, students will need Popsicle sticks or tongue depressors and glue. Students should also be encouraged to bring items of their choice to decorate their frames, including glitter, wooden heart or letter cutouts, and stickers. First, students will glue four of the sticks together to create a square. This will serve as the basic frame. Once this is done, each student is free to decorate his frame as he chooses. The teacher may offer suggestions such as spelling "I Love You" in wooden letters glued to the frame.

    Valentine Mailbox

    • For this project, each student will need to bring an empty tissue box from home. In addition, students will need construction or scrapbooking paper, pipe cleaners, and any other craft supplies they may wish to use. Each student decorates his own mailbox. Then, each mailbox is assigned a number and all the students vote for the "Most Creative Mailbox." The winner may be given a small prize.

    Personalized Candy Bar Wrapper

    • For this project, students will need a chocolate bar and construction paper or Valentine's wrapping paper. First, each student will wrap his candy bar as if it were a gift. Then, out of construction paper, he will cut a strip of paper long enough to wrap once around the middle of the candy bar. This strip of paper should be secured with either glue or tape. With a colored marker, each student can write his own Valentine's Day message on the strip of paper.

    Scented Flowers

    • This project requires only construction paper, pipe cleaners, and perfume. First, each student picks his favorite color of construction paper. From this paper, he cuts a circle and then several petal-shaped pieces. The petals are then glued around the edge of the circle. Then, the pipe cleaner is glued to the flower to create the stem. Finally, each student squirts a small amount of perfume onto his flower, creating the perfect gift for Valentine's Day.
