What Is the Best Way to Clean Tile Grout Lines Back to New? thumbnail
Tile grout is not too difficult to clean and, once clean, is simple to maintain.

Exercise caution when cleaning grout -- white grout and colored grout are cleaned differently, in some cases. Start with the mildest grout cleaners and progress to stronger cleaners only when the milder cleaners are not effective. Once the grout is clean, maintain it with the milder cleaners. Use the harsher chemicals on an infrequent basis, when the mild cleaner starts to lose ground against stains, discoloration, mold or mildew. Does this Spark an idea?

  1. Mild Grout Cleaner

    • Bleach: Use a solution of 1 part bleach to 3 parts water to remove mold, mildew and discolorations. Use a bleach solution only on white grout. Colored grout will change color if cleaned with bleach. When working with bleach, wear gloves, safety glasses and a breathing mask. Follow label directions and never mix bleach with other chemicals. Work in a well-ventilated area; use a fan if necessary.

    Strong Grout Cleaners

    • White vinegar: This cleaner is mild enough to use on a daily basis, even on unsealed grout. Use a spray bottle to apply white vinegar full strength or diluted with water, as necessary. Leave the vinegar on the grout for 10 minutes to use as a disinfectant. A nylon brush with medium-stiff bristles, used to scrub the grout in a circular pattern, is effective in cleaning it thoroughly. Rinse the grout with clear, clean water and a heavy sponge or towel.

Baking soda paste: Mix 1/3 baking soda, 1/3 white vinegar and 1/3 salt to form a paste. Use a putty knife to spread the paste onto the grout. Leave the paste on the grout for 10 minutes, then scrub it in a circular motion. Be absolutely certain to remove the paste entirely, then rinse and dry the grout thoroughly.

Lemon juice: Lemon juice is effective in removing stains and discolorations from grout. Use a spray bottle to apply the lemon juice, let it sit for 15 minutes, then remove it with a damp sponge or towel. Repeat the procedure if the discoloration remains before moving on to a harsher chemical.

    Harsh Grout Cleaners

    • Commercial grout cleaners: Be discerning when choosing a commercial chemical grout cleaner, available at hardware stores, as these products are made with very strong chemicals. Use them very carefully, adhering diligently to the directions on the label. These cleaners are best used every 3 months for heavy-duty cleaning.

Steam Cleaner and Electric Floor Cleaners

    • Steam cleaners, used by professionals and rented for personal use, are generally extremely effective for cleaning grout. Try one before using a harsh chemical grout cleaner. You can buy a steam cleaner or rent one from a hardware store or janitor supply store.

Battery-operated tile and grout cleaners that have power brushes save you a great deal of time and effort.
