Nap Mats for Kids
When a child takes a nap in a place other than his bed, he needs a comfortable, safe place to sleep that nap mats provide. Choose a mat based on personal preference, the child's needs and facility needs. For example; sleeping bags may not be a viable option for a center with a large group of children because of the constant washing needed to keep them clean.

Cots
-
Cots, either fold-out or single piece, work well for naptime. Many manufacturers sell stackable cots, which helps keep a classroom or daycare neat. When choosing a cot, pick a type that cleans easily. Kids often soil cots with use, and the cots need to be cleaned. A cot that requires disassembly to clean not only takes more time to sanitize, but also more work.
Sleeping Bags
-
Sleeping bags, another common choice, wash easily and provide warmth without the need for additional blankets. Sleeping bags come in a variety of sizes, colors and patterns. Sleeping bags often wear out faster because of frequent washings, but are relatively inexpensive.

Foam mats
-
Foam mats, like yoga mats, provide a soft surface for kids to sleep on. These work best for kids who nap at many different locations. Roll up the mats after each use for easy storage and transportation. The mats need to be wiped down when soiled, or after every five to six uses.
Selecting the Mat
-
Select a naptime mat that fits the child's needs. The child should fit on the mat comfortably. The mat shouldn't provide a distraction. Large, shaped pillows, exciting patterns and fringe can provide a child with something to mess with instead of napping. Also, keep in mind the child's medical needs when choosing a mat. For example; if the child has breathing problems, look for a mat with a pillow to prop up the head. In addition to choosing the right mat, it needs to be placed in a quiet, dark, traffic-free location. Just like when a child sleeps at night, outside light and noises interrupt naptime.
