Ideas for Outdoor Movie Screens

Families, friends and neighbors enjoy getting together for outdoor parties. Warm evenings provide great opportunities for an outdoor movie night. Lawn chairs, popcorn and a video projector create a fun atmosphere to watch a newer or classic film. A large and effective screen completes the package for a memorable movie night. Deciding on what type of screen to use for your outdoor party depends on how many people will attend and how big a screen you desire. Does this Spark an idea?

  1. White Bed Sheet

    • Use a white bed sheet from a queen- or king-sized bed. Pick a thicker sheet or layer two sheets together, as thinner sheets will not reflect the light from a projector too well. Tie the sheet between two trees or tape it to the side of a separated garage or the back of your house. Make the sheet as tight as possible to eliminate distortion in the picture.

    Inflatable Screen

    • Rent an inflatable screen from an audio-visual rental company. These screens come in a variety of sizes, even as large as 100 feet wide. The screens can be blown up in a matter of minutes using inflating blowers. Stakes and tethers anchor the screen to the ground. Tie the screen to railings if you place the screen on your deck. Churches and companies use inflatable screens for large events, but smaller screens can be used for family or neighborhood block parties.

    Pull-Up Screen on a Stand

    • Rent or purchase a portable pull-up screen attached to a stand. Be prepared to anchor the screen down with stakes and rope on a windy evening. Choose between different surfaces on the screen: Gray screens with black backs block out light from behind and provide better daylight viewing. White screens work best at night and give the clearest picture.

Side of a House or Building

    • Use the side of your house or building if the wall features a flat and light gray or white surface. The advantages of using a large outdoor wall include no cost and no movement on a windy night. Pictures usually will be grainier, however, depending on the material of the wall. A white concrete wall shows well, but uneven surfaces such as brick or siding would give a more distorted picture.
