Graduate History Scholarships at American University
Students interested in earning an advanced degree in history can opt to earn a master's or doctorate degree in history from historic American University. The Richard and Carol Breitman Endowed Scholarship

Created through the donations of Margaret Anthon, the Richard and Carol Breitman Endowed Scholarship awards a $3,000 scholarship (as of 2011) to a graduate student in the Department of History at American University. Eligible applicants must be enrolled full time and be pursuing a doctorate in history. The scholarship may be used to cover tuition costs. Preference for the Breitman Scholarship goes to students with a focus on European history. The award may be renewed each year provided the student maintains full-time status and academic merit. Students must be nominated by a Department of History faculty member to be considered for the scholarship.
The Roger Brown Dissertation Fellowship

Offering a $10,000 scholarship, the Roger Brown Dissertation Fellowship goes to a doctorate student in the Department of History at American University. The fellowship is intended to help a student work on and complete his dissertation. To be considered for the fellowship, a student must be selected by a faculty member in the Department of History. The department chair chooses the recipient. The fellowship is funded by Roger Brown, a former American University faculty member, and his wife, Nancy.

Dorothy and Victor Gondos, Jr. Graduate Research Fellowship

Open to all American University history graduates, the Dorothy and Victor Gondos, Jr. Graduate Research Fellowship provides students with a $3,500 fellowship, as of 2011. The fellowship money helps students with research projects that involve the U.S. National Archives. The application must include a three-page research proposal and a letter of recommendation from the student's faculty advisor. The winner of the fellowship is required to present at the College of Arts and Sciences (CAS) Research Conference held at the end of the summer.
Hart A. Massey Fellowship

The Hart A. Massey Fellowship provides a minimum of $1,000, as of 2011, in scholarship money to graduate students at American University, including history graduate students. Students must be from Canada and be studying full time in one of American University's graduate programs. The award may be renewed for an additional year as long as the student maintains good academic standing. Interested students should contact the Department of History chairperson to obtain an application, and all applications must be submitted by February 1 of each year.
