Tips on Writing the G.E.C.A. Essay
Getting a quality education is key to a successful career. At G.E.C.A. (Dr. TJ Owens Gilroy Early College Academy) students get a leg up on college. Knowing how to write the G.E.C.A. essay will help your chances of getting accepted. The chosen high school students have the opportunity to get an associate's degree at the same time they get their high school diploma. Once finished with the program, students are able to transfer to UC, CSU and other universities as a junior in college.

Format

Follow the guidelines for the G.E.C.A. essay. Format your essay with Times New Roman 12-point font. Use 1-inch margins all around your paper. Type your name in the upper right hand corner of the paper. The maximum length of your essay is two pages.
Introduction

Introduce yourself. Let the academy know who you are. Take a short amount of time to write about where you came from. Use this space as a way for you to give the academy a personal view of who your are. Write about your family and what your family means to you. List two words that describe who you are and explain why. For example, you are honest and determined because you value the truth and do not let barriers hinder you from moving towards your goals.

Reasons

Explain to Gilroy Early College Academy why you want to attend the school. List the reasons why you feel it is the best place for you. Give specific details as to why the academy is great. For example, you would be given the opportunity to finish college sooner, therefore allowing you to start your career earlier and become a successful adult.
Honor Code

Read the Honor Code. Based on our own personal qualities, write how you will abide by the G.E.C.A. Honor Code. Give specific details as to how you would do this. For example, let the academy know your family raised you in a home where you were taught respect for rules and people.
Start Early

Begin your essay early. Waiting till the last minute creates stress and the quality of your essay will suffer.
