Reasons Kids Fail Math
Mathematics is made up of several subjects, including abstract algebra, calculus, statistics, geometry and complex analysis. The four thinking standards that are involved in mathematics are connection, communication, problem solving and reasoning. As more kids struggle with math, the education system needs to look at not why kids fail math, but rather why the system fails to teach kids effectively.

Connecting Math to the Real World
-
Some kids fail math because they just don't understand how learning math is relevant or connected to the "real world." Teachers and parents should use concrete examples to demonstrate the importance of math in daily living. Use examples kids can relate to, such as calculating expenses for clothes and food shopping, measuring the ingredients for a birthday cake, figuring out the percentage of tip to leave when eating out, or the amount of materials required for building a doghouse.
Using Integrated Learning Systems
-
Many kids fail math because the current teaching methods used in some schools do not work. One idea is to introduce integrated learning systems such as games, simulations, problem solving, logical thinking and computer math games. Studies show that kids learn new concepts and skills while they are solving problems. Math classes should also be broken up into smaller groups of four of five students. This will help foster communication and cooperation rather than competition between the students.

Problem Solving - Providing Extra Tutoring in Math
-
Some students fail math because they have a hard time keeping up with the pace at which the subject is taught. Teachers and schools can address this problem by providing math tutors for students who lag behind. Tutors should be made available free of charge at the end of the school day.
Teacher Re-education
-
It is not always the kid's' fault that he fails math. Modern mathematics curricula that have replaced traditional curricula can be complicated. Some teachers do not fully understand the concepts of the new system and are therefore not equipped to effectively teach it. A teacher has to understand and be extremely comfortable with a subject in order to properly explain it to a student. Teachers should be thoroughly trained in the new math before attempting to teach it to a student.
