Halloween Science Experiments & Activities

Halloween not only provides kids with an entertaining holiday, but there are also a variety of science experiments and activities for home and the classroom to make it educational. Using things found in your home, classroom or a local craft store, you can make items that scare, creep out and amaze your students. Does this Spark an idea?

  1. Halloween Slime

    • Make Halloween slime with white craft glue, disposable cups, food coloring, water, borax powder, a plastic spoon and a measuring tablespoon. Put a spoonful of borax powder into a cup and fill it with water, stirring the mixture. Fill another cup with 1 inch of glue. Add 3 tbsp. of water to the cup with glue and stir, then add a few drops of food coloring and stir. Add 1 tbsp. of the borax solution you mixed into the cup with glue and food coloring, and stir well. Once the slime forms, let it sit for 30 seconds before playing with it.

    Homemade Lightning

    • Make a Halloween figurine that produces lightning with just metal paper clips, an inflated balloon and a wool sweater. First, use modeling clay to make a Halloween figurine; a monster works great, but it can also be a pumpkin or ghost. Once the figurine is made, insert several safety pins into it. Take the figurine, balloon and sweater into a dark closet and rub the balloon against the wool sweater for 30 seconds. The rubbing motion causes some of the electrons on the wool to collect on the balloon, giving it a negative charge. Now hold the balloon near the paper clips, without touching them, and watch the sparks fly. When the balloon is near the paper clip, it causes the electrons in the paper clip to move away, leaving the paper clips with a positive charge and causing sparks to fly between the two objects.

    Glowing Potions

    • Make a drinkable potion using tonic water, soda and a black light for your next Halloween party or event. First, make ice cubes out of tonic water to use for this experiment. The quinine in the tonic water causes a glowing blue color, but it doesn't taste good so you can add tonic water ice cubes to a better tasting soda. Fill a clear glass with a light-colored citrus drink and some of the tonic water ice cubes. Turn on the black light to enjoy your glowing blue Halloween potion.

    Screaming Cup

    • Make a haunted, screaming cup with this experiment using a plastic drinking cup, yarn or string, a paper clip, paper towel, a nail, scissors and water. Cut a piece of yarn or string about 20 inches long. Punch a hole in the center of the bottom of the cup with the nail and tie one end of the yarn to the middle of the paper clip. Pull the other end of the yarn through the hole in the cup. Tear a small piece of the paper towel and fold it once, then get it damp in the water. In one hand, hold the cup firmly, and wrap the paper towel around the string near the cup. While squeezing the string, pull it down in one continuous motion to make a screaming sound. Experiment with different types of string and sizes of cups to see what different sounds this will make.
