What Kind of Clothing Can I Donate?
Cleaning out your clothing closet can help you minimize clutter and organize your life. Instead of throwing away their old clothing, many people choose to support a good cause and donate their clothes. Proceeds from donated clothing go to support charities. Thrift stores sell the clothing at a low price that families in need can afford. Thrift stores like Goodwill, The Salvation Army and Dress for Success are in constant need of donated clothing.

Basics

Stores that accept donated clothing will also accept things like hats, scarves, belts, handbags, boots, shoes and jewelry. Charities will accept all kinds of clothing, but undergarments, socks and pantyhose are not accepted unless they are sealed in an unopened package. Items should be gently used, meaning that they are intact and don't contain holes or stains. All donated clothing must be washed, dried and clean. Pockets should be emptied. Donated clothes should be folded and packed in boxes and bags.
Warm Clothing
-
There are 600,000 homeless families in the U.S. Warm clothing helps people in need stay warm during cold weather months. Establishments accepting clothing donations are in constant need of cold weather attire and accessories. They will accept coats, jackets, hats, scarves, gloves and snow boots. Pin gloves together in pairs.

Workplace Attire
-
Places like Dress for Success help people in need find affordable workplace attire. There is a need for professional clothing including suits, suit separates, professional blouses, shirts, unopened hosiery, coats and outwear. You can also donate slacks, pants, ties and workplace-appropriate shoes. While Dress for Success will only accept workplace attire, there are many places that will accept casual and workplace clothing.
Babies' and Children's Clothing
-
Babies and children grow quickly. As they age, they continue to outgrow clothing and essentials. With 28 million children in the U.S. living in low-income families, it is difficult for some parents to outfit their families. Donated children's clothing provides families with an affordable way to outfit their kids. School clothes, coats, athletic shoes, jackets and play clothes are all needed. In addition to baby clothing, maternity clothing can also be helpful.
