How to Repair a Scratch on a Matte LCD Display

Marshal M. Rosenthal

LCD displays are more susceptible to surface scratches than those with a glass front. To repair a scratch on a matt-finish LCD computer display, diffuse the scratch so that it is no longer visible to the naked eye. A few common household supplies will be needed, but no special items or equipment. The procedure is straightforward and can be accomplished within a few minutes.

Step 1

Wipe the face of the LCD display with a clean edge of a microfiber cloth. Blow off the LCD display's face with a burst of compressed air.

Step 2

Dip a cotton swab in petroleum jelly. Rotate the swab to cover it liberally in petroleum jelly. Remove excess jelly from the swab by wiping it against the open mouth of the petroleum jelly’s jar.

Step 3

Place the end of the swab that has the jelly on it just to the left or, if vertical, just above the scratch. Press the swab onto the surface of the LCD display. Swipe the swab across the scratch or, if vertical, down the scratch. Remove the swab once the end of the scratch has been passed. Dispose of the swab in the trash.

Step 4

Place a clean edge of the microfiber cloth just to the left or, if vertical, just above the scratch. Repeat the procedure just completed with the swab. Blow off the surface of the LCD display with a burst of compressed air.
