Most fruits and vegetables are low in calories and chock-full of essential antioxidants which protect your body against chronic illnesses. When you buy fruits and vegetables that are in season, you can expect to pay low prices for fresh produce. From citrus fruits to green leafy veggies, the spring season has a host of options.
Green Leafy Vegetables
Mustard greens are regarded as a cool season crop. They are rich in folate and vitamins A and C. When selecting your greens, choose unblemished ones, with now yellowing or brown spots.
Spinach comes in early spring in warmer climates. It is naturally fat free and is a source of iron. When purchasing, a sign of freshness are bright green bunches.
Artichoke leaves in your grocer's produce section should be tightly closed. You can also check for bruises within the creases of the leaves. Keep your artichokes refrigerated.
Beets are in season beginning in fall, but you can still find fresh ones in the spring. When purchasing beets, look for crispy leaves that are still attached to the beetroot.
Carrots are considered in season from early spring to early summer. They provide you with vitamin A and antioxidants. Look for firm carrots that are bright in color and have few cracks.
Leeks are found in late summer and can be sauteed or added to soups, broths and salads. Select firm leeks with dark green leaves.
Limes are naturally fat free and rich in vitamin C. The best limes usually have smooth and shiny skin. You can store them in the refrigerator for up to two weeks.
Oranges are customarily winter fruits, but you can find fresh varieties in the spring. They strengthen your immune system and are rich in fiber. Choose oranges that have a smooth skin and then keep them in the refrigerator.
Miscellaneous Fruits and Veggies
Broccoli is high in fiber and antioxidants and is often enjoyed in salads or sauteed. When buying, you should ensure that the florets have no odor.
Strawberries are naturally cholesterol free and rich in folate. When shopping for strawberries, look for firm, bright-red berries with the stems still attached.
Pumpkins contain potassium, fiber and vitamin A. If you are planting pumpkins at home, water only the roots and vines. If you are buying them at the market, look for firm pumpkins with minimal cracks.
