Responsible high school students today are more independent than ever before. As a result of this independence, they need to earn money to pay for gas, auto insurance, cell phones and other luxury items. They need jobs that will help them balance school, work, social life and extracurricular activities. Many employers are sensitive to the unique needs of working teenagers and try to accommodate their schedules. These jobs provide the best alternative for high school students trying to earn an income.

  1. Education Jobs

    • Students who excel in certain academic areas can find good jobs as tutors. The demand for qualified tutors in the areas of math, science, foreign language and social studies is great. Skilled tutors can earn good money working after school, on weekends and in the summer. Most tutors work out of their own homes, at public libraries or in their student's home. This is a great job that provides experience for those interested in becoming a teacher.

    Medical Jobs

    • The medical profession offers many part-time jobs for high school students. Clinics, hospitals, nursing home, animal clinics and rehabilitation centers employ teenagers in various positions. They may be responsible for typing, filing, working with animals, delivering flowers and mail to patients or observing and assisting medical professionals. This is an ideal job for teenagers considering a career in the medical field. Employees are paid hourly wages and the working conditions are good.

    Retail Jobs

    • High school students may want to consider jobs in retail. Part-time jobs at larger retail stores usually offer flexible hours to accommodate the schedules of high school students. Department, hardware and grocery stores employ cashiers, clerks and stockroom personnel. Some retail employers pay a commission as well as a base salary. Many businesses use high school students in customer service positions. They can gain valuable experience in retail that could lead to managerial positions after high school.

    Restaurant Jobs

    • Fast food restaurants are one of the biggest employers of high school students, but many other food-related businesses employ high school students. Most restaurants employ them as cashiers, waiters, hosts and hostesses and kitchen personnel. High school students who seek to work in most restaurants must be at least 16 years old. Employees usually are paid a salary plus gratuities. Choosing to work in an upscale restaurant is a good choice if a student is interested in a food-related career.
