Decorations
-
Tie heavy cord between two trees. Drape red sheets or long cuts of fabric over the wire and secure it with clothespins. Use this as the stage of the big top tent. Put a tarp on the ground for the children to sit on. Hang pictures of circus animals -- such as elephants, zebras and giraffes -- around the party area. Fill an old toy wagon with stuffed animals. Link two or more wagons together to make a train. Decorate a large trampoline with balloons and streamers.
Costumes
-
Clown costumes are colorful and creative. Encourage your guests to come dressed in circus-themed costumes or fill an old suitcase up with large, old clothes. Place a variety of clothing items including large pants, shoes, wigs and jackets in different sizes. Open the suitcases during the party and allow the children to create their own circus-themed costumes. Encourage one of your friends to come and paint faces of their children to complete their costumes. Offer prizes for the most creative, the funniest and the most animal-like.

Big Top Food
-
Make burgers with faces on them. Set out different sliced vegetables, condiments and additional items. Give each child an opened-faced burger and have him create a face with the supplies provided. Make waffles fries but provide different types of dip for the fries including ranch, honey mustard, curried mayonnaise and green tomato ketchup. Make the cake look like a train with different animals in it. Use animal crackers to decorate the cake or bake several round cakes the same size. Stack them on top of each other and frost the cake with red, yellow, green and blue frosting to make a circus tent cake.
Entertainment and Games
-
Create side show games, including fishing with a clothespin lines, knocking over tin cans or throwing rings over thin-necked bottles. Invite some clowns to come create balloon animals and do magic tricks or offer clown lessons. Give your guests room to try out juggling, jump on the trampoline or run relay races around the yard.
