St. Patrick's Day is a good time for pots of gold and shamrock crafts.

Children love to do arts and crafts projects. Holidays are exciting for kids and just the time to work on craft projects that follow the theme of the holiday being celebrated. Christmas brings snowflake and Christmas tree crafts, Valentine's Day brings hearts and cupids, and St. Patrick's Day brings shamrocks, rainbows, pots of gold and leprechauns. There are many craft project ideas for celebrating St. Patrick's day for children.

  1. Handprint Rainbow With Pot of Gold

    • There is always a rainbow that leads to a pot of gold, according to St. Patrick's Day lore. For this simple but colorful craft idea, the teacher or parent provides colorful tempera paint, construction paper, glue and scissors. The child dips the palm side of his hand in the first color of paint and makes a handprint arch, repeating along the top of the arch with another color, then another color and so on, until a rainbow has been made completely of handprints. Cut a pot from black construction paper and gold coins from yellow construction paper. Once the paint is completely dried, glue the pot at the bottom of one end of the rainbow and the gold coins to the top of the pot.

    Rainbow Mobile

    • A rainbow mobile is a craft idea combining a rainbow with a pot of gold and a shamrock. The supply list includes a small paper plate, felt pens or crayons, yarn, scissors, glue and construction paper. Cut the paper plate in half. Use the felt pens or crayons to color a rainbow onto the paper plate. Cut a shamrock from green construction paper, a black pot from black construction paper, and a pot of gold from yellow construction paper. Draw coins with a marker on the yellow construction paper that has been cut. Glue the coins to the pot. Once the glue is dry, punch a hole into the top and both bottom ends of the paper plate, the top of the shamrock, and the pot of gold. Connect the pieces into a mobile with lengths of yarn.

    Pot of Gold Candy Jar

    • Holidays and candy go hand in hand, and kids will love making a candy jar on St. Patrick's Day. The list of ingredients includes a baby food jar with a lid, green crepe paper, white liquid glue, yellow curling ribbon, scissors and small yellow pompoms. Wash and dry the baby food jar. Glue green crepe paper layer by layer around the baby food jar until the glass can no longer be seen. Glue pompoms on top of the baby food jar lid until there is a little pile of them, creating coins. Once all the glue dries, tie a length of curling ribbon around the rim of the baby food jar lid. Fill the jar with candy.

    Lucky Pot of Gold

    • A lucky pot of gold is refrigerator art made with a magnet. A child will see her creation every time she grabs a glass of milk. Cut a 4-inch circle from black construction paper. Glue yellow and gold pompoms to the top half of the circle to portray coins. Make a handle for the pot from black and gold pipe cleaners and glue the ends to the back of the circle. Glue green sequins to the underside of the pompoms in an upside-down arch to create the rim of the pot. Glue a small magnet to the back of the pot so it can rest on the refrigerator door.
