Haunted Places to Visit or Stay in Ohio

Visitors to the state of Ohio can find several places that have a reputation for paranormal activity and ghostly sightings. Many of the locations are historic homes that are now museums. Some spots provide guided tours of the buildings, with a couple offering overnight stays.

  1. Chateau Laroche

    • Chateau Laroche, in Loveland, is a historic museum that has many reports of haunted occurrences. The castle, which sits on the banks of the Little Miami River, was built by Harry Andrews, who started the build in 1927 and continued for 50 years. Andrews was fatally burned on the roof of the castle, and some say his ghost now roams the castle's halls. Reports from staff and visitors of the castle include recounts of a dark shadow that walks up the spiral staircase that leads to Andrews' room, bathroom doors unexpectedly slamming and a lamp swinging over one of the castle tables. In addition to reports of Andrews haunting the castle, visitors and staff also report seeing a female ghost, who is said to be the wife of a moonshiner who live in the area, walking around the garden area and across the river. The last ghost that is reported to be haunting the castle is that of a viking, who is believed to be attached to one of the museum's swords. The ghost is seen in the northern area of the castle and is said to ring the doorbell and knock on doors. Visitors to the castle can take one of the guided tours that are offered daily.

    The Prospect Place

    • The Prospect Places, located in Trinway, was one of the destinations that was involved with the Underground Railroad. The building, which was originally owned by G.W. Adams, and other structures located on the property are said to be haunted by three ghosts. The barn is believed to be haunted by a bounty hunter who was searching for slaves. The story goes that the slaves killed the man behind the barn. People who visit the barn report feeling an evil presence. Visitors also report seeing a lady in the basement. The ghost is reported to be an injured slave who died in the basement. The ghost is supposed to be non-threatening, and many visitors actually feel a happy feeling coming from the spirit. The last spirit is thought to be William Cox, the son-in-law of G.W. Adams. The man left his wife, Anna, and was never seen again. Many believe that he now roams the property looking for a way to gain forgiveness for his act of desertion. Visitors who wish to experience Prospect Place can take a guided tour or stay overnight in the mansion.

    Golden Lamb Inn

    • The Golden Lamb Inn, located in Lebanon, was built in 1815 and is reported to be haunted. Both visitors and staff have reported strange occurrences including seeing the ghost and hearing the voice of the Clement L. Vallandigham, an Ohio congressman during the Civil War who accidentally shot himself at the inn. Other occurrences reported by staff include stuffed animals flying off gift shop shelves and someone yelling the name of a worker who was cleaning one of the rooms. Staff members also report seeing the ghost of a little girl playing at the inn. The theory behind the ghostly sightings is that the girl is Eliza, a child who died at the inn after falling ill during travels with her family. It is said that her father, who worked for John Quincy Adams, left the girl and her mother alone at the inn when the child got sick. Her body was buried nearby, but was later moved back to Kentucky. Visitors to the Golden Lamb can take a tour or reserve a room for the night.

    Kelton House

    • Kelton House is a museum located in Columbus. The structure is a two-story building that was built in 1854 by Fernando and Sophia Kelton. The family lived in the home for three generations before it was turned into a museum by the Columbus Foundation. Many believe that the family still lives in the house, and visitors and staff have reported strange occurrences. Reports include the sighting of a see-through Sophia Kelton looking out the upstairs window, and she has also been seen as a milky mist by those touring the museum. Guests of the museum report hearing Fernando whispering to them and bumping into them in the hallways. A tour guide also reports walking into Fernando, and then watching as the apparition disappeared. Other reports, by staff and guests, include footsteps coming from the attic and sightings of Grace Bird Kelton, daughter of the Kelton's son Edward.
