Having an Asian-themed wedding is a unique way to integrate Asian customs, culture and cuisine into your marriage ceremony and reception. Whether you or your spouse-to-be is of Asian decent or not, an Asian-themed wedding will offer you and your guests a glimpse into worldly traditions that will make for a memorable celebration. When planning your wedding do some research to find out how you can accomplish an Asian theme with the right decor and food.

  1. Invitations

    • Start things off by designing wedding invitations that let guests know they will be attending an Asian-themed wedding. You can do this by selecting an Oriental flower for the design on the invitation cover, or using a Chinese symbol for double happiness. Pay attention to color combinations to ensure that you are not misusing certain hues. Using red ink on pure white paper, for example, has a reference to death and funerals in Chinese culture.

    Wedding Attire

    • The bride and groom shall have to decide if they want to wear traditional Oriental wedding attire, or simply incorporate an Oriental color or accessory into a bridal gown and tuxedo. Going the traditional Oriental route will require the bride and groom to have their attire specially made out of silk, and embroidered with Oriental designs. If the couple wish to incorporate Asian-themed accents into their attire, a sash, jacket or slippers can be enough to maintain the Asian theme.

    Flowers

    • You can make bridal bouquets, centerpieces and additional floral arrangements out of traditional Oriental flowers, such as orchids, lotus seeds, cherry blossoms and lilies. Bamboo is another plant that is commonly incorporated into Asian wedding floral arrangements. Neutral colors, such as whites and creams for lilies and orchids, are elegant for weddings, but do not be afraid to use bright colors, such as pinks and purples, too. You can also find a way to integrate your main flower choice into your wedding cake as a topper or to decorate the tiers.

    Food

    • Food is an integral part of Asian weddings, and can be a culinary delight for your wedding guests. For a Japanese wedding, consider hiring a sushi chef or serving dishes that are considered delicacies, such as lobster and duck. If you are having a Chinese-themed wedding, pay attention to how many courses of food are served, as this has cultural significance and symbolism. Traditionally, eight meals are served at Chinese weddings, not including dessert.

    Decor

    • Decorate your wedding ceremony and reception site with Asian-themed decor, such as paper lanterns, water bowls with floating lotus flowers, and ornamental fans. Make sure your color scheme is in line with the theme of your wedding, as well. Chinese weddings traditionally combine reds and golds, while Korean weddings use a lot of purple colors.
