Jobs for High School Students

Home Business
-
One of the best ways to earn extra money while in school is to create a home business. Students can make their own hours and work in a way that will not interfere with studying or classes. Decide what you are passionate about and see if you can make that into a business. Love animals? Put up posters for a dog walker or pet sitter. Enjoy long baths? Start an organic bath product company from your kitchen. Not only will you make money by starting your own business, but you will also learn valuable skills such as time keeping and financial recording.
Restaurant Jobs
-
Jobs in the hospitality industry are great for students. Restaurants have flexible schedules, and tasks are relatively easy and don't require much prior experience. Apply for a part-time job for after-school or on the weekends. Possible positions include host or hostess, busboy or girl, dishwasher or server. Typically a server must be over 18 so she can serve alcohol. During summer vacation, you can take on more shifts if you want to make more money.

Retail
-
Like restaurants, retail chains have ample job openings for students with little experience and minimal education. Large retail stores have a high employee turnover rate so the chances of finding a job a good. Students may expect to work in stock as a cashier or cleaning. Many stores require employees to wear several hats and be trained in more than one area. As with a restaurant job, students can ask for more shifts as the school year comes to a close.
Internships
-
Although most summer internships are unpaid, they are a great way to get an inside look at certain businesses. They also look very good on a college application. If you already know what field you want to study when you attend college or what field you want to join after you graduate high school, you can most likely find an internship in that area. Popular internships are found at hospitals, newspapers or corporate offices. A student wishing to be a veterinarian when he graduates college should look into vet offices or nonprofit animals shelters for internships.
