Bring fun craft projects into the Sunday School classroom.

Engage preschool-age children in craft projects during Sunday school to emphasize stories from the Bible. Hands-on activities encourage children to make deeper connection with the lessons they have learned. Children share their craft projects with parents and re-tell the Bible stories they relate to, which further deepens the impact of the lesson.

  1. Paper Fish

    • Cut fish bodies from construction paper for each child in the Sunday School class. Cut multiple colors of tissue paper into small pieces, as provide glue, markers and crayons. Have children glue the pieces of tissue paper to the fish bodies to create multicolored scales and use the markers or crayons to draw faces on the fish. Use this craft project in connection with a story such as "Rainbow Fish," or tie the craft project in with the Bible story about Jesus feeding the multitudes. An alternative lesson is to show how each fish is different, the same way each person is different and unique.

    Paper Plate Rainbows

    • Cut a paper plate in half and then cut each half into arches, each arch to represent a color of the rainbow. Have the pieces ready for children when they arrive to Sunday school, and instruct them to color each of their arches with crayons or markers. Have the children assemble their arch rainbow pieces like a puzzle and glue to a piece of construction paper. As an alternative, the arch pieces can be connected with yarn or fishing line to create a rainbow mobile. Use this craft in connection with the story of Noah and the rainbow.

    Stained-Glass Cross

    • Cut pieces of wax paper in the shape of crosses, and have multiple colors of tissue paper available. Have children arrange the pieces of tissue paper on top of the wax-paper cross and attach them with glue. Once the craft project is dry, the edges can be trimmed by the Sunday school teacher with a pair of scissors. Punch a hole in the top of the "stained-glass" cross and attach a piece of yarn so children can hang them in their bedroom windows. Use this project in connection with multiple Bible stories on the significance of the cross.

    Egg Carton Flowers

    • Cut the sections of an egg carton, and cut flower petals from white and yellow construction paper. Have children glue the petals to the piece of egg carton. Add a stem to the flower by poking a green pipe cleaner through the bottom of the egg carton section. Bend the end of the stem to keep it in place. Arrange the flowers in a vase to display the flowers. Use this craft project during the beginning of spring or as part of the Easter celebration.
