Things a Third Grade Teacher Should Have for the Classroom
Preparing a new classroom for the school year is a lot like packing for a trip--you have to have the right supplies if you want things to go smoothly. Teachers have many responsibilities in terms of managing a classroom, and most of these responsibilities come with some sort of material requirement. Creating a checklist of things you should have for your third-grade classroom is one excellent method for ensuring you start the year off right.
-
Essential Supplies
-
Students will not always remember their supplies and you may at times need to provide them with a loaner. Additionally, you will need basic supplies to manage your tasks, grade papers and create decorations for your class. Pick up pencils, pens, crayons, colored pencils, index cards, tape, a stapler, scissors, and some extra paper. You may also need a few spare notebooks, erasers and construction paper, depending on the lessons you intend to teach.
Organizational Supplies
-
Classrooms, as a rule, are not enormous places. Once you mix in the desks, kids and supplies, you start to run out of space quickly. You can maximize your space by getting organized. Pick up some filing cabinets to store assignments and class information, boxes or shelves for supplies and project work and some plastic tubs for toys or games. The more organized your space, the more easily and quickly you can move from one activity to the next.
-
Reading Material
-
Every teacher should have a fair selection of age-appropriate reading material in her classroom. Reading material provides students with something to do in between assignments and encourages them to keep their minds moving. Pick up some children's books, magazines, and comic books at your local thrift shop to ensure your students will always have something to read. Vet this material carefully to make sure there is nothing inappropriate, especially the comic books.
Teacher Supplies
-
Every teacher needs a calendar for keeping track of assignments, due dates and other activities. You will also need a grade book for recording your students' progress. Teachers may want to invest in a low-cost printer so they can print copies of interesting assignments at home and bring them to class, and a laptop that you can bring to and from school can make your grading life a little easier. Finally, a nice backpack or shoulder bag for your teaching supplies is necessary for getting to and from the classroom.
