Produce a chain reaction of crazy with your mad scientist party.

From Dr. Jekyll to Dr. Frankenstein, mad scientists have become an integral part of science fiction. If your birthday boy has an interest in science and also has a bit of a crazy, silly side, consider throwing him a mad scientist-themed party. With a few zany ideas and some determination, your party will be fit for any party guest, mad or otherwise. Does this Spark an idea?

  1. Invitations

    • For your party invitations, cut out some large beaker-shaped pieces of thick card stock paper, preferably green. On the front, write "Caution: Do not look inside." On the inside of the card, write "Now that you've looked inside, you now must take part in Dr. [birthday boy's name] experiment." Include any important information, including things like location, contact information and what the guests should bring. You may want to have the guests dress up as their favorite mad scientists or something science-related.

    Decorations

    • As soon as your guests walk into the party space, you want them to instantly feel the mood of the party. Place a sign stating "Dr. So-and-so's Laboratory" at the front, and decorate the area with "Bio-hazard" signs, white or chalkboards with mathematical equations written on them and lots of lab equipment, like beakers and microscopes. Also place fake body parts, such as eyeballs and brains, inside jars filled with water. The color scheme should include, black, yellow and silver.

    Refreshments

    • Offer your guests the Mad Scientist's fizzy formula, by blending lime sherbet with lemon-lime soda and serving the concoction in beaker-shaped cups. Gather together an assortment of globe-shaped fruits, such as grapes and cherries, and connect them to each other using toothpicks. You want to create molecular shapes using the fruits and toothpicks. Make Petri-dish gelatin by mixing together a gelatin box mix and pouring small amounts of the mixture into individual Petri dishes. Place a small gummy worm in the middle of the dish and let the gelatin dessert refrigerate until firm before you serve.

    Games and Activities

    • Science experiments are a must-have for a mad-scientist party. Show the kids how different substances react with each other, such as adding vinegar to baking soda. Make different stations throughout the party where kids can go to perform different lab tests, like the typical volcano reactions, as well as static electricity with balloons. Play trivia games asking questions about science, such as "What is an atom?" and "What is Newton's first law of motion?" Try a relay game in which teammates quickly have to pour ingredients into a beaker to set off a chemical reaction before another team to win.
