Disabled veterans in Alabama may qualify for several different homestead exemptions.

In Alabama, disabled veterans may receive real estate tax exemptions. Alabama residents are subject to real property taxes at the state government level and at the local level. The Alabama Department of Revenue collects the state's property taxes. Each local county or municipal government collects local property taxes from local residents. Alabama offers several homestead property tax relief programs to disabled veterans, some of which residents who are not veterans may also receive.

  1. Types of Exemptions

    • Alabama provides a state property tax exemption to qualified veterans. Each county may enact its own homestead rules allowing disabled veterans to claim additional homestead exemptions from county property taxes in addition to the state tax exemption. Veterans may apply for state and county-specific exemptions.

    Statewide Exemptions

    • All residents receive a general homestead exemption allowing them to exclude their primary residences and first 160 acres of land from state property taxes, limited to $4,000. To qualify for the general homestead exemption, residents must own a single-family residence or mobile home and use it as their primary residence on Oct. 1 of each tax year they apply for the exemption.

Alabama 100 Percent Ad Valorem Exemption

    • The Department of Revenue provides complete tax relief from state property taxes to all residents who are age 65 or older, permanently disabled or blind. Alabama provides complete property tax exemption to disabled veterans, regardless of income. Alabama provides exemptions to those without disabilities age 65 and older with limited incomes.

    Application Process

    • To apply for the state homestead program, disabled veterans must provide proof of age, income and two forms of disability proof. Acceptable proof includes letters from licensed state physicians and the U.S. Department of Veterans Affairs. Some county governments that provide additional homestead exemptions from county taxes will accept letters from retirement organizations certifying the veteran's military status and disability. Nonveterans and those without disabilities age 65 or older must furnish proof of income (less than $7,500) for the preceding tax year and age. Alabama requires disabled veterans to apply once and receive a disability status from the Department of Revenue. However, homeowners must submit a new claim form each year to qualify for the tax exemption for that tax year. Homeowners who fail to submit a claim form will lose their claim for exemption for that tax year.
