Habits are what people subconsciously develop overtime due to regular indulgences. It is commonly believed that habits developed in childhood follow into adulthood. It is important to develop a healthy set of habits during childhood, so children do not come across any problems when they enter their practical lives. Parents and teachers play a very significant role in helping children develop good habits such as time management and healthy eating.

  1. Follow the Same Menu as your Child's

    • Parents are responsible to guide their child towards developing time management and healthy eating habits. They best way for children to adopt healthy habits is if they see their parents or siblings executing those habits. You must adopt the same eating habits as you expect your child to eat. This encourages a normal-eating behavior by the child, since everybody at home eats the same food.

    Classify Everyday Activities

    • Parents can classify their kids' everyday activities into various categories and give them certain time limits to carry out those activities. Such categories can include watching television, homework, home errands, sports or games and social activities. If it helps, write down a schedule containing all the activities from morning until bedtime, each with its specified time period, for instance, "football practice - 4:00 p.m to 6 :00 p.m," "chores - 6:00 p.m. to 7:00 p.m."

    Set Rules

    • Setting certain rules apply to both parents and teachers. If the child gives you a hard time, set strict rules regarding certain behavior or activities and adhere to them consistently; for instance, do not let him go play unless he finishes his homework or performs his household chores. The same applies to eating, for instance; do not buy him an X-Box unless he starts eating healthy, and quits eating junk food.

    Make Lifestyle Changes

    • As a parent, you need to take simple actions and make small amendments in eating styles such as buying healthy food products. Similarly, when you eat out or get fast food, choose healthy over junk food items. Follow a fixed meal time every day and consume more of fruits and vegetables at home.

    Punctuality Lessons

    • Children can be taught to manage time by being involved in deciding punishments for being late to school, or not submitting homework on time. Teachers can set an example for students by coming to the class exactly on time. Setting a limited time to finish a task helps the child manage time in an effective way.

    Lessons on Unhealthy Eating

    • Children can be made aware of the consequences of eating unhealthy foods through formal lessons, informal discussion, pictorial descriptions and creative story telling. They can be educated about weight related health problems and how it negatively affects their lives if they don't develop the right eating habits.
