Art Projects for Two Dimensional Design Classes
Some art classes focus on the elements of design in either two dimensions or three dimensions. Two-dimensional design requires students to use length and width in their designs, without using depth. Art projects assigned in a two-dimensional design class will focus on the aspects of design that are exclusive to two-dimensional design.

Sun Symbol
-
A symbol is a representation of an object rather than an actual picture. Instruct students to create a symbol representing the sun. They can use any of a number of elements, including ink or pieces of paper. Students should use black, white and one color to create their symbol. This project is meant to focus on the design process. Students must think about what the sun looks like and how they would like to represent the sun and its purpose.
Symmetrical Composition
-
One of the aspects of art is balance. Sometimes that balance is even, while other times it is uneven. A symmetrical composition requires students to make a piece of art that is perfectly symmetrical in all quadrants. Instruct the students to create a piece of art using only circles, triangles and rectangles. The piece must be equal in all four quadrants of the paper. Any colors can be used, as well as any type of medium that the student chooses.

Photo Montage
-
A montage is a collection of pictures made into one picture. This project helps students understand emphasis in art. Use either photographs or pictures cut from a magazine to create this montage. Instruct the students to choose one photograph that will be larger and the focus of the picture. Choose a picture that is obviously larger. One that is out of scale will work better. A secondary picture must also be chosen to be the second part of the montage that viewers are attracted to. This can be the background of the montage or another part. The student should then also choose a small picture to hide somewhere unexpected in the montage. This picture should be one that doesn't belong.
Texture Quilt
-
Texture is another important element of design. Instruct your students to locate 20 different textures they would like to use in their texture quilt. These can be found in pictures of magazines or photographs. Each square should be made completely of the same texture. The objects should show the texture, but not be recognizable objects. Choose a quilt block design and use the textures to create the pattern. Place all of your quilt blocks together on posterboard to complete the project.
