Show your love and appreciation for your husband with a thoughtful birthday gift.

Surprising a devoted husband with a gift on his birthday is one way a wife can show her spouse how much she appreciates him. Choosing a gift he will like, however, can be challenging without his input or cooperation. Even if you are not sure what he wants or needs, keeping his personality and interests in mind can help you select a thoughtful birthday gift he will love.

  1. The Romantic

    • Whether you have been married one year or 10, a romantic birthday gift can show your husband how much you desire him. Dress in his favorite type of lingerie and take a set of boudoir photos for him. If you do not feel comfortable having photos professionally taken or printed, use a digital camera and photo printer in your home. Write him a romantic letter or poem and spray it with your perfume. Book a room at a nearby hotel or inn for a romantic birthday excursion. Surprise him with a bubble bath, flowers, wine and chocolates. If the cost of a hotel is not in your budget, prepare a romantic night for him at home. Prepare his favorite meal and set the mood with romantic music and scented candles.

    The Sportsman

    • Whether your husband is an athlete who loves playing sports or a sports fanatic who just enjoys watching them, he may enjoy a sports-themed birthday gift. Give him two tickets to see his favorite sports team with his buddy. If your husband enjoys a good tailgating party, give him a tailgate chair, mini grill or cooler to take to the festivities. Show your husband he is your favorite athlete by giving him personalized sports apparel he can wear when playing sports. Merchandise or apparel from his favorite sports team is also an option. Golf lessons can give your husband a way to enjoy sports and relax on his days off. Encourage your husband to freshen up after a day of playing sports by giving him a gift set that includes body wash, cologne and shaving gel.

    The Couch Potato

    • If your husband's idea of a good time is sitting on the couch, there are a number of birthday gifts he will likely love. Buy him a universal remote control with a built-in bottle opener so he can control all his favorite gadgets while enjoying a cold beer. Make his time on the couch even more relaxing by giving him a recliner or LCD TV. Help him minimize wrist pain during his hours of working online or surfing the Internet by giving him an optical ergonomic mouse. Get him off the couch, at least temporarily, by giving him a gaming system with action sports or dancing games.

    The Cook

    • If your husband is the chef in the family, give him a birthday gift he can use to prepare his favorite meals. Buy him a pair of silicone oven mitts in his favorite color. If he enjoys grilling, buy him a mini indoor electric grill he can use for grilling indoors. Stroke his ego by giving him a personalized apron with a message such as "World's Greatest Cook" or "The Grilling King" on it. Give him a soda maker he can use to create his own carbonated beverages. If he prefers beer with the meals he cooks, sign him up for a beer of the month club.
