List of ISO Protection Classes

ISO rates communities based on their available fire protection.

Homeowners' protection policies require communities to be rated based on fire protection services, such as adequate dispatch systems, fire alarms and fire departments, afforded to them. Under the Insurance Services Office, communities are given a Public Protection Classification (PPC) rating that grades their level of fire protection services. Insurance companies use this class rating to establish fire insurance premiums.

  1. Classes 1 to 8

    • An ISO rating class of 1 to 8 means that a community has an exemplary rating concerning fire protection. The ISO's review has established that the community has an efficient dispatch center, water supply and fire department available to handle all emergency calls. Each department of fire safety has met or exceeded all ISO's Fire Suppression Rating Schedule criteria to receive this class rating.

    Class 8B

    • Any community that receives an ISO rating of 8B has received credit for having a dispatch center and fire department. Unfortunately, the community has not met the criteria for having an adequate water supply under ISO's Fire Suppression Rating Schedule. The community has provided training, superior equipment and management techniques to compensate for the lack of a sufficient water supply, thus receiving the 8B rating instead of the less desirable 9 rating.

    Class 9

    • Communities receive this class rating when they lack a water supply to handle fires. The community does have a dispatch center, as well as a fire department. But the community has not provided the superior training, management techniques and equipment to compensate for the lack of a water supply that would have given them an 8B rating.

    Class 10

    • Communities receive ISO's class 10 rating when they do not meet the ISO's minimum standards. This means the community lacks the adequate dispatch center, fire department and water supply to handle any major blazes. A community will receive a class 10 rating if the distance to the primary responding fire department is more than five miles away.
