Sixth-grade students can write on a variety of topics.

Coming up with an essay topic can be a difficult task for a sixth-grader. Sixth-graders are at the age where they are just learning how to write essays with any level of proficiency. The idea of coming up with an essay topic is intimidating for young students, so teachers should be able to develop topics for students to help them avoid the anxiety of creating their own. This will allow them to turn loose their creative energies and just write their essays.

  1. Interpreting Literature

    • Sixth-grade students can kill two birds with one stone by writing essays that provide an interpretive analysis of a piece of literature. The Claremont California Unified School District recommends that students be introduced to a wide array of literature that introduces them to an entire range of common human experience. One way to have students learn cultural awareness is to have them write an essay that analyzes a piece of literature by finding the major elements of the essay such as the plot, characters and any themes or symbols recurrent throughout the story. Emphasize the need to examine and include cultural elements that appear in the story such as distinct language, customs and ideas. Ask students to point these out in their essays.

    Historical Topics

    • History provides another essay topic that can be fairly simple for a sixth-grader to write. Historical events and people allow students to write about a subject that they can simply conduct a little research over and write about. Historical topics that have some level of controversy or that have some direct impact on the student give students a vested interest or connection to the topic that will help them in writing an effective essay.

    Writing a Review

    • Students like to give their opinion on just about everything under the sun. Letting them do it in the form of an essay is one way to allow them to voice their opinions. Students can write reviews of movies, books, television shows or anything else for that matter. Providing students with a list of guidelines of the subjects they can cover in their essay will help them write an effective review essay. Students can, for instance, write a review of a product by reviewing the pros and cons of the product throughout the essay.

    Health and Science

    • Science and health provide a fourth topic that students can write on that will provide a fruitful avenue for an essay. There are many different areas for potential topics within the fields of health and science. Students can write on disease prevention and healthy living after conducting a little research on the issue. Topics in science such as the impact of the weather on the natural environment or even the impact of human beings on the environment can provide sixth-grade students with suitable topics to write about.
