Landscape Rake Uses

Landscaping rakes are wide, many-toothed attachments that attach to the back of a small tractor. They resemble the head of a normal rake in most aspects except for size and strength of the teeth or tines. They are meant to move material such as dirt or debris over a flat surface of land for a smoothing effect. The surface of the soil can be aerated slightly if the tines are set to dig into the surface a few inches. Does this Spark an idea?

  1. Clearing Debris

    • Cleaning flat, low-grass fields such as baseball fields with a landscape rake occasionally can quickly remove large amounts of debris. The tines are set to run just atop the soil surface, but not deep enough to disturb grass roots. The size of debris that can be cleared depends on the spacing of the landscape rake's teeth. Closer spacing will catch smaller debris.

    Lawn Preparation

    • The teeth of a landscape rake are quite durable. After debris has been removed from an area destined for new lawn, the teeth of the landscape rake are set to dig into the earth about 1 inch. As it is pulled or pushed across the lawn, the landscape rake will set the final grade to a smooth and even finish while breaking up the surface layer of dirt to allow the roots from the grass planted over it to penetrate deeply.

    Gravel Roads

    • Landscape rakes not only clear debris from dirt paths before they become gravel roads, they also help grade them. Then, after the gravel is laid, they grade the gravel so that it sits evenly at a uniform height across the road. Later, if debris has built up on the road, they are used to brush the debris into the ditches on either side or to clear it away.

    Pastures

    • Pastures with grass that's too low to tangle the tines can be cleaned of twigs and trash while sweeping dried manure evenly across the field with a landscape rake. Sparse pastures that have been over-grazed or poorly managed--resulting in hard-packed earth--can be aerated with a landscape rake set to dig into the ground about 1 inch.
