Scratches
-
Plastic seam filler works well on small surface scratches on most types of countertop. Use a putty knife to paste the seam filler into the scratch. Wipe away excess immediately with a clean cloth. Check the scratched area after the filler hardens and repeat the process as needed to even out the scratched section with the surrounding area.
Hardwood Butcher Block
-
Of all the types of countertop, wood is usually the easiest to repair. Smooth out gouges and scratches manually with fine-grit sandpaper or use an electric sander. Once the area is smoothed and level, finish with a coating of vegetable oil or another type of non-toxic varnish.

Laminate Repair on Burns
-
Laminate countertop is the least expensive type of covering but it has certain disadvantages. It does not tolerate hot temperatures and will scorch or burn. Use of a crème cleanser will gently clean a minor burn or scorch. For more severe burns, the portion of laminate damaged needs to be replaced. Cut away the burned area and, using the proper adhesive, replace the section with matching laminate.
Laminate Repair on Breakage
-
Laminate can break or crack when a heavy object falls on it. Also, laminate has the potential to peel or break away from the substrate. This is usually an indication of rotting underneath the laminate. In this instance, replace the laminate in a similar manner as with severely burned or scorched patches. Use contact cement as the adhesive due to the damage occurring on the substrate. Apply the contact cement to both the laminate and the substrate to create a secure bond between the two.
Ceramic Tile
-
Of all the types of countertop, you can generally repair ceramic tile easily and quickly. Carefully remove the section of tile and old grout that is damaged with a putty knife and a grout saw. Mix just enough mortar to install as many tiles as you need to repair the damaged area. Apply the mortar and tile and grout around the edges. Level the tile with surrounding tiles and allow to set.
