Many couples are choosing a country or western theme wedding not only because it may fit their lifestyle, but because of the abundance of possibilities it gives in locale, decorations and food. Western-themed weddings have an element of relaxation, casualness and gaiety. When you decide to use a western theme, you will have a wedding to remember.

  1. Venue

    • Selecting a western theme for your wedding does not necessarily mean you must search for a country church, barn or ranch as a venue. Any church and reception hall can be transformed into a western atmosphere. Altar flower arrangements, pedestal flowers and other accent arrangements should contain more casual, brightly colored flowers like sunflowers, delpheniums, snapdragons, daisies and cosmos.

    Attire

    • From casual black jeans, denim skirts, fancy western shirts, cowboy boots and hats to formal wear, there are many choices for you, your wedding party members, and your guests. Bride's dresses usually have a layer of lace, are ankle or mid-calf length, with Gibson sleeves or full cap style sleeves. Necklines are keyhole- or sweetheart-shaped. Victorian-styled wedding and bride's maids dresses are ideal for a western-themed wedding. Attach the bride's veil to a feminine cowgirl hat or a flower head wreath. The groom and groomsman's attire can include fitted vests, either fabric or leather, bolo or string ties, large belt buckles in place of cummerbunds, and western-cut suits or tuxedos.

    Decor

    • The decor of your western wedding can include hay bales and barbed wire, saddles, cow bells, wagon wheels, wanted posters, ropes, cowboy hats and horseshoes. Use red-and-white checkered table clothes with mason jars, cowboy boots, or rustic baskets to hold your centerpiece flowers. Flowers should be wildflowers and blossoms picked from a garden "out back." Sunflowers, lupine, zinnias, daisies, cosmos, snapdragons, and black eyed Susans. Use natural long grasses as filler for your arrangements. An alternative to fresh flowers is to use dried flowers and seed pods.

    Menu

    • Western weddings inspire menus that include barbecue items of ribs, chicken, pork and beef. Beans, coleslaw, potato salad, fruit, biscuits, lemonade and hand-churned ice cream complete your wedding reception menu. Your wedding cake can be more casual or traditional, with a western-fashioned cake topper or decorated with fresh garden or wild flowers.
