Games can be educational as well as fun.

It's not always easy to make homework fun. For many students, homework is seen as a chore, a reality that makes assigning homework a difficult task for many teachers. However, with the help of games, homework can be made a fun, enjoyable activity. The best homework games for kids include video games, puzzles, card games and word games.

  1. Video Games

    • Video games are immensely popular with kids. Because of this, many websites are available on the Internet which using videogames to teach educational material to students. Websites like FE Games and AOL Kids have many online games available that teach students subjects like math, language, history and social studies. These games include racing games, platform games, role playing games and sports games.

    Card Games

    • Card games are a popular type of game for teaching language and social studies. Flash cards have been used for a long time to teach words and concepts to students. These games are relatively simple in concept. After a student has been given a series of vocabulary words, the teacher or parent shows them cards with images on the front and asks them to say what word(s) describe the image. These games are very helpful as homework assignments in vocabulary-rich subjects, particularly for younger children.

    Trivia Games

    • Trivia games like Trivial Pursuit and Brain Chain can be used to teach kids facts in many subjects. When assigning trivia games as homework, make sure to assign questions that pertain specifically to the lesson at hand. Because it can be easy to "cheat" on these games at home, the best way to use them in homework is to have the kids play the games at home then start a new round in class the next day. This tests the kids' ability to remember what they learned from the game.

    Puzzles

    • Puzzles can be used to teach kids almost any subject. Puzzles include word games like hangman and crossword puzzles, as well as visual games like jigsaw puzzles and science cut-ups. Word puzzles develop vocabulary and critical thinking skills, while jigsaw puzzles can help kids learn geography, science and virtually any other subject with a visual component.
