Flower Ideas for a Grandmother's Funeral
Choosing flowers for a Grandmother's funeral requires thought. Determining if all the grandchildren will contribute money to one arrangement, or if they want to purchase flowers individually, is the first consideration. Whether it is a group or individual purchase, deciding on the amount to spend is the next step. Once these two things are determined, choosing the type and style of flowers is the last decision.

Sprays
-
Before purchasing a spray, consult with other family members. The relatives closest to the deceased, or those arranging the funeral, typically purchase the spray. After deciding on a spray, choose what type. A lid-spray, also called a full couch casket spray, extends the full length of the casket for a closed casket funeral. A foot spray, or half-couch casket spray, is shorter and intended to cover the bottom half of the casket in an open casket funeral. These sprays often include a metallic cutout of the word "Grandmother" placed on top of the flowers.
Arrangements
-
As a way of truly honoring your grandmother, consider her tastes when choosing an arrangement. If she was a gardener, choose flowers she grew in her own garden; if she was an outdoorswoman, choose wildflowers that reflect nature. If she was a Christian, consider flowers in the shape of a cross. If your grandmother was more traditional, choose white flowers including roses, orchids and calla lilies. Florists can add a floral pick that says "Grandmother" if you want it personalized.

Flowering Trees
-
As a more lasting floral memorial, purchase a floral tree for planting at a public park, on the grounds of an association of which your grandmother was a member, or a school of which she was an alumnus. Take into account the hardiness zone planting location when choosing the tree. For example; tulip poplars, pink dogwoods, crepe myrtles, cherry trees, rosewood and dogwood trees. Florists often provide a card with a picture of the tree chosen, describing the planting location. You may wish to add a small plaque with her name on it, displayed at the base of the tree.
Flowering Plants
-
If your grandmother loved flowering plants, purchase one of those for her funeral, according to her tastes. If she loved roses, a rosebush is a fine option; if mums adorned the edges of her sidewalk, they are the obvious choice. After display at the funeral home, plant it in the yard of a loved one as a lasting memorial to your grandmother. For instance; plant it in the yard of her husband, one of her children or even one of her grandchildren. Other options include a local flower garden or, if she spent her last years in a nursing home or assisted living center, include a small plaque with her name engraved on it and donate it to her last home.
