Certain dishwashers will require you to overhaul your kitchen, while others are designed to slide comfortably into place. To install a dishwasher on your own without outside help, you need a basic understanding of and experience with both plumbing and electrical work. A dishwasher must be connected to a water line to operate and will need to be hard wired into the electrical grid of the house for power. If you do not feel comfortable in these two areas, have your dishwasher professionally installed.

Basic dishwasher installation requires a few common home tools, including a screwdriver and a wrench. A drill may also be required if you're mounting certain parts from the dishwasher -- such as any required vents or pipes -- to the kitchen wall, kitchen counters or to the dishwasher itself.
