Crafts for Cub Scout Day Camps

Crafts for Cub Scout Day Camps thumbnail
Cub Scouts attend Day Camp as well as perform community service.

Attendees of Cub Scout Day Camp include first grade Tigers, second grade Bobcats and Wolfs, third grade Bears and fourth and fifth grade Webelos. The crafts planned must suit all age levels and should meet one of the requirements a Scout needs to complete an achievement in his book. Since each level has its own book, vary the crafts by age level, while following a theme. Completed achievements allow Scouts to advance in rank.

  1. Tigers

    • Making a "safety" necklace is a craft that helps meet requirement 3F of the "Keeping Myself Healthy and Safe" achievement. Pass out plastic whistles on a cord, and untie the knot on the cord to add to the necklace. Tie a double knot on each side of the whistle to hold it in place; slide three pony beads on either side. On one side, slide down a small flashlight with a small hole on one end and, on the other side of the whistle, slide down a small magnifying glass with a small hole in the handle. Tie double knots on either side to hold these items in place, then add more pony beads to each side. Tie a knot back in the ends of the strings to make a necklace. Purchase supplies from a hobby or craft store. To complete the requirement, discuss what to do if you become lost or separated from your family in a strange place.

    Bobcats & Wolves

    • Fulfilling the emergency preparedness elective 23B of the "Let's Go Camping" achievement requires small compasses that have latches to open and clip on your belt loop, some satin string and blue and gold pony beads. Measure 1 foot of satin string and cutting it off. Perform a half hitch knot by folding the cord in half, placing the folded end down through the middle of the compass and drawing the cord ends down through the folded end loop. String pony beads on the ends, then tie them off to finish the project. Purchase supplies from a craft or hobby store.

    Bears

    • Creating a neckerchief slide/first aid kit is a practical craft for Bears. To add to Bear Achievement 11 "Be Ready," collect old 35mm film canisters long before day camp starts, and spray paint them white. Sometimes local stores that develop film will save them for you. Cut 1 1/2-inch lengths of elastic; use a glue gun to make a loop on the side of a film canister. Paint a red cross on the front of the canister to denote its dual purpose. After the canister is dry, fill it with small first aid supplies like bandages, some gauze and personal-size pouches of antibiotic ointment.

    Webelos

    • As part of the "Readyman" achievement, Webelos must put together a first aid kit with their families. Creating the container for this first aid kit is a craft idea for the older boys. Before camp begins, collect enough shoeboxes to have one per boy. Shoe stores, parents, grandparents, relatives and friends can contribute. Using construction paper, markers and pre-cut foam shapes and letters, let the boys decorate the box. It must have a red cross somewhere on it, and have a visible label identifying it as a first aid kit. The freedom in the creation of this craft and the minimal structure appeals to the creative side of the older boys.
