Learning can be fun when you turn it into a game.

Math, money, measurement and spelling are just a few subjects that can be covered with fun third grade learning games. Students can form teams to engage in friendly competition and learn together. From first place to last place, nobody loses with these imaginative contests; prizes can be awarded to all of the participants.

  1. Pizza Fraction Game

    • Pizza pieces help teach fractions.
      Pizza pieces help teach fractions.

Have students make three construction-paper pizzas. Each pizza will be cut into equal pieces. The first pizza will be cut into to two equal pieces, the second into four equal pieces and the third pizza into eight equal pieces. Students will then be asked to identify different fractions as they relate to the slices of pizza they select. If they select one slice from the first pizza, they will identify the fraction as ½ -- in other words, they are holding one of two equal slices. Or, for example, if they select three slices from the second pizza, they will identify the fraction as ¾ -- in other words, they are holding three of four equal slices. The exercise will allow them to visually understand the concept of a fraction and translate it to a fractional number format.

Peanut butter is one of the easy ingredients in no-cook cookies.

Divide the class into small groups and provide them with a recipe for no-cook cookies. The simple recipe consists of a mixture of 1 cup peanut butter, 2 cups of rice cereal and 1/2 cup of sorghum dropped in spoonfuls onto a piece of wax paper. Then, sprinkle a handful of chocolate candies on top of the cookies.

Students work together to follow simple written instructions to prepare the cookies, while learning about measurement and group interaction skills with this project.

    Spin and Spell

Divide the class into four team to play Spin and Spell. With a red, green, yellow and blue team, students will sit in the four corners of the room and spin a soda bottle to determine what team takes a turn spelling third grade level words.

Students will decide on the answers within their teams and play until one of the teams spells five words correctly. This game allows students to strengthen their spelling and teamwork skills.

    Youth Work for Yummies

Students earn an income to buy candy with their change.

Third graders become aspiring writers as they earn a dollar for writing a paragraph on why they love candy. The dollar is given to the children in the form of three quarters, one dime, two nickels and five pennies.

The lesson for this project will be earning an income and then having the children count out the proper change for the different candies they will purchase.

Three candy bars will be purchased for 25 cents each, one lollipop will be purchased for 10 cents, two pieces of bubble gum will be purchased for 5 cents each and five jelly beans will be purchased for 1 cent each.
