Postgraduate Dental Schools

Postgraduate dental research can help you build a more rewarding dental career.

Training to professionally care for those pearly whites requires a significant time investment. Dental school, on average, lasts about four years, and new dentists may spend at least a year or two working in an established dental practice before they are able to open their own business. But dentists who want to take their training to the next level so they can teach or conduct research will need to attend postgraduate dental school.

  1. University of Maryland Dental School

    • The University of Maryland Dental School offers a number of highly specialized postgraduate dental programs, from pediatric dentistry to prosthodontics. These programs allow current dental professionals to continue their education by choosing a specialty, such as orthodontics or dental surgery. The university is ranked among the highest in the nation for postgraduate dentistry and seeks applicants in the field who demonstrate initiative and self-direction in their profession.

    Harvard School of Dental Medicine

    • The Harvard School of Dental Medicine offers advanced graduate education programs that help dental professionals obtain either master of medical science or doctor of medical science degrees. The Harvard School of Dental Medicine strongly emphasizes research as integral to the postgraduate dental experience; a project and thesis are required for both the masters and doctoral dental degrees. The school also offers graduate tracks that allow students to blend their dentistry program with other concentrations, such as education, leadership and public health.

The University of Health Science Center at San Antonio Dental School

    • The advanced dental programs offered by the University of Texas Health Science Center at San Antonio include residencies, specialty certificate programs and graduate degrees. Each program has specific requirements for admission. Advanced degrees in general dentistry, specific types of dental surgery and specialties, such as orthodontics, are also offered. The university's dental school website contains information on the requirements for each program.

William C. Strupp Postgraduate School of Dentistry

    • The Strupp Postgraduate School of Dentistry in Clearwater, Florida offers seminars and online courses that aim to help busy dental professionals get the education required to meet the diverse needs of their patients. Examples include Simplifying Complex Cosmetic & Restorative Dentistry and dental assistant seminars.
