Bible Creation Crafts for Preschool Toddlers

Children often ask tough questions, like "Why is the sky blue?" or "Where did I come from?" The book of Genesis can be a starting point for many such discussions. According to the Bible, God created the earth, and everything in it, over a six day span. On the seventh day, He rested. Hands-on activities can engage toddlers and preschoolers, helping them to understand the concept of creation.

  1. Creation Wheel

    • This craft will help children remember details of the creation story in the correct order. Start with two round paper plates. Divide the first plate into eight equal sections, printing a title, such as "The Creation Story" in the first. Print, or have the child print, a Bible verse describing what God created in the second through seventh segments. For example, you could write "On the first day, God created day and night" on the second segment. In the eighth section, print, "God rested." Have the children draw or color a picture in each section, or download a template (see "Resources"). On the second plate, cut out one section the same size as the sections on the first plate. Use a brass fastener to join the plates together in the center. Children can use their plates to retell the story, exposing a verse and a picture as they turn their top plate.

    Creation Lapbook

    • Lapbooks combine crafts and information in a file folder to teach children about any subject. A creation lapbook could be made up of a minibook about the creation story, an animal file folder game, a matching activity, coloring pages, printing practice sheets and other activities associated with the Genesis story (see "Resources").

    Creation Baking Activity

    • Some teachers prefer to zero in on the story of Adam and Eve when talking about creation. At the DLTK site, one suggestion was to bake gingerbread men at the beginning of the lesson. While the gingerbread men are baking, you can discuss how God created man and woman. This is also a good time to talk about how every person is unique, as each child decorates her individual cookie.

    Creation Quilt

    • This craft is made over a seven day period. Each day, teach the children about another day of the creation story. Then have the children draw or color something that God created on fabric swatches or construction paper squares. At the end of the lessons, assemble all of the squares into a quilt by stapling, gluing or sewing them together.
