The holiday sometimes known as Washington's Birthday is also commonly known as Presidents' Day.

George Washington's Birthday is February 22, although as of 1971, it has been celebrated on the third Monday of every February and renamed President's Day. Presidents' Day combines Washington's Birthday with Abraham Lincoln's birthday and honors all past United States presidents. Hosting a Washington's Birthday, or Presidents' Day, party will allow you to learn more about the history of the United States while at the same time having fun.

  1. Decorations

    • Prepare the location of the party by decorating for Washington's Birthday, otherwise known as Presidents' Day. Hang red, white and blue decorations, such as balloons, streamers, posters, Presidents' Day-themed mobiles or even life-size cardboard cutouts of former presidents -- particularly Lincoln and Washington. Decorate your guests as well: Create red, white and blue stovepipe hats or white wigs made from cotton balls for guests to wear.

    Music

    • Create a CD or two full of patriot music before the party . Some good options include official military tunes, different versions of the national anthem, patriot ballads or even songs performed by popular modern musicians that refer to the United States or to patriotism in general. Play the CD at a fairly low volume during your party to provide background atmosphere. You can also hire a band or invite musical friends to perform a short show during the party.

    Food and Beverages

    • Create patriot snacks for your party. Shape and color cakes, cupcakes or cookies to represent presidents or patriot symbols. Apple and cherry pies both represent the United states and George Washington, respectively. Roll strawberries in red, white and blue candy sprinkles. Create log cabins out of peanut butter and bananas, pretzels or even pancakes. Prepare red, white and blue pudding or gelatin. For thirsty guests, have a variety of red, white and blue drinks on hand; provide juice for the kids and, if desired, cocktails for an adult party.

    Activities

    • Watch a movie about a president, or related to the presidency, that is age appropriate for the party guests. Play a presidential- or patriotism-themed game of trivia. Younger children can draw pictures, color printouts or complete worksheet activities and games related to presidents -- especially Lincoln and Washington. Write a letter to the president, or, if you live in Washington D.C., take a trip to the Lincoln Memorial, Ford's Theater or the Washington Monument. Craft a model of a president out of construction paper, toilet paper rolls or clay. Create cards, and play a card game dedicated to the presidents.
