The invitation should set the tone for the wedding.

Your wedding invitations set the theme for your wedding. Expensive, high quality, ultra-formal invitations should not be used for an informal wedding, and vice versa. The invitations give the guest an idea of how she should dress for your wedding based on how formal the invitations are. Many people order invitations from a stationary store, and many others make their own on the computer. Also, a small segment of people still write them by hand.

  1. Homemade

    • With the increased popularity of scrap booking, many creative brides are making their own invitations. Some ask for help from their mothers or attendants, making this a fun activity for her to do with friends and family. Homemade invitations allow for increased creativity using many of the small embellishments found in craft stores. They can be formal, semi-formal or informal, depending on wording, font, colors and additional items added. There are kits that can be purchased that come with everything needed, or you can put together your own ideas. Usually they are printed out on the computer.

    Hand Written

    • The bride who is well versed in the art of calligraphy can hand-write her invitations. This can give the invitations an intimate, formal look. Hand-written invitations can also be used for semi-formal or informal invitations, with more informal paper and adornments on the invitations.

    Digital Offset Printing

    • Digital offset printing is the general type that is purchased from a stationary company that specializes in wedding invitations. Generally, you will pick out a theme from their collection and provide the printer with the details of your wedding and reception. The printer supplies you with the invitations, two envelopes for the invitations, reception cards, reply cards and envelopes for the reply cards. Some people include a small card with directions to the wedding or reception in the envelope, too.

    Thermography

    • Thermography is a technique where heat is applied to the wet ink on the invitation. This causes the ink to rise off the paper, providing the look of engraving. This refined ink process can be used for formal or semi-formal invitations.
