Things to Include in a Science Project
By selecting a science topic that is of interest, researching the topic, performing an experiment and having supporting information prepared, a science project will be successful and lead to additional curiosity about related topics. Creating a scientific experiment and practicing the presentation are important to succeeding in a science project.
-
Choose a Topic
-
Choose a topic that is of interest to you. It should ask a question, or a hypothesis, that you are interested in researching for an answer. Define how you will find the answer through the experiment. Identify any variables that will impact the outcome. Utilize books, magazines, the internet and companies that can provide information for your research. Ask people you know questions about your topic to get an idea of what they know and what your experiment should accomplish. Keep a notebook with reference information for every step of your research.
Prepare the Experiment
-
The experiment should prove the hypothesis of your question. Prepare an experiment that is easy to present and understand. It needs to be scientific in its approach yet presented in non-technical language for everyone to understand. Keep it scientific and simple. The results must be measurable and charted. Observe each step throughout the experiment and keep notes. Practice the experiment and keep notes on each step, and note any questions that may arise during the presentation. Take step-by-step pictures, to add to your presentation material.
-
Use Supporting Materials
-
Analyze your results, combine them with the notes and research information, and create a written report. Compare the results of the experiment with your hypothesis and create charts and graphs to support your findings. Include any pictures taken during each stage of the experiment to provide additional support. Include what you discovered by the experiment and the conclusion that you reached. Include background information and sources. Create a list of questions and answers that may have arisen during the process and be ready to answer those questions during your presentation. Summarize the steps you took throughout the process in a short report.
Prepare the Presentation
-
Prepare the presentation of your project. Use display boards with pictures and charts, or create a computer presentation of your information. The presentation should be neat and organized, following the process and explaining the findings of your experiment and your supporting data. Be prepared to answer questions during your presentation. Practice presenting to a group, using understandable terminology. Proper preparation will lead to confidence and comfort in your knowledge of the topic and the findings of the experiment.
