What to Do When Pfister Kitchen Faucets Leak

If your Price Pfister kitchen faucet leaks, replace the cartridge, which is the main part inside the base of the faucet. This part controls the operation of hot and cold water, and it sometimes wears out due to sediment build up or damage that occurs during usage. Replacing it is the only way to stop leaks. This step takes about 30 minutes and requires few special skills. Does this Spark an idea?

  1. Shut Off the Water

    • Close the two water valves under the sink, one for hot and one for cold water. Turn both counterclockwise to stop water flow into the kitchen faucet. If you do not do this, water will shoot out of the faucet base when you take off the handle and cartridge.

    Remove the Handle

    • Take off the faucet handle by removing the set screw at the base of the handle with an Allen wrench and pulling the handle off the faucet. On some Price Pfister faucets, a round cap covers this set screw to prevent rust. Take it off first, and then remove the screw.

    Remove the Bonnet

    • Remove the bonnet, a rounded nut under the handle, by unscrewing it with your hands. Or, use pliers if it is stuck. Be careful not to mar the surface with the pliers. Wrap them with a cloth or tape to prevent damage to your faucet.

Replace the Cartridge and O Ring

    • Remove the adjusting ring, which is another nut under the bonnet, with the pliers. Pull the cartridge out of the faucet with the pliers or by hand. Replace the faucet O ring with a new O ring and insert the new cartridge. Replace the adjusting ring and bonnet, tightening each with the pliers to secure the stem inside the faucet base. Install the handle and tighten the set screw with an Allen wrench or screwdriver.
