Science Projects on Hand Gestures Affecting Personality
Determining whether hand gestures correlate to an introverted or extroverted personality type can provide an interesting and informative basis for a school science project. Students preforming this project will have the opportunity to learn about recognizing personality types based on body signals while interviewing test subjects and monitoring their movements.

Introvert and Extrovert Personalities

Students will need to recognize the differences between introverted and extroverted personality types prior to recording their intended subjects. Introverted personality types are typically more reserved and quiet than their extroverted counterparts, and an introverts' body language will reflect their need to keep to themselves. Extroverts, on the other hand, will engage others with lively talk and a more open body posturing. Understanding these personality traits will assist students in reading their subjects' hand gestures.
Personality Testing

To establish a basis of comparison for subjects' personalities, a personality test should be administered and used as a control in the science project. An adapted version of the Myers-Briggs® test can be accessed online at no cost and then be administered to subjects to gauge their level of extroverted and introverted behaviors when making decisions. Based on the results of this test, students will be able to compare their subjects' movements to test results.

Recording Hand Gestures

After administering a personality test, subjects can interview subjects and record their reactions and physical movements during the course of the second questionnaire. An interviewed subject who consistently uses wide, sweeping gestures while answering a questions may have their responses and their movements categorized as "extroverted". An "introverted" response may involve a subject who appears more withdrawn and demonstrates closed or clasped hands during the course of the student's questionnaire. The student should document accordingly.
Reaching a Conclusion

Based on findings of behavior types and reactions characteristic of the introverted and extroverted personality types, students can form conclusions on how their subjects hand gestures relate to whether they are introverted or extroverted. Another point that students may use to form a conclusion can include the duration of time it took for test subjects to answer, and how that relates to the personality test findings. Students should provide an informed conclusion with these factors.
