Things for College Dorms

Things for College Dorms thumbnail
Dorm living, while fun, is very different from home.

Living in a college dorm is quite different from living in a family home. Some of those differences stem from a lifestyle change -- such as late nights, loud music and often a college roommate. Other significant differences stem from living without some familiar household conveniences such as a private bathroom and a full kitchen. In order to make the transition easier equip your dorm room with things for all aspects of student life: studying, living, eating, and entertaining.

  1. For Studying

    • Most dorm rooms will come with a bed, desk and a chair, but nothing more. In order to make the desk a functional work space, add a desk lamp and a desk set that includes a three-hole punch, stapler, pen holder and file holder. While adding a calendar can help the student stay organized, a calendar can also be decorated with photos from favorite places or from a favorite TV show or movie. Bring an extension cord or power strip to increase the available power outlets in the room. If the room does not come with a shelf, purchase a shelf to keep all books and papers organized.

    For Sitting and Sleeping

    • College dorm rooms don't often have space for additional couches or chairs. The student's bed becomes a space for reading and sitting with friends, as well as for sleeping. To make the most of the college bed, start by adding a foam mattress topper. Often called "egg crates" because of their shape, these pads make the plain mattress softer and more comfortable. Dorm beds are commonly extra-long twin size beds that require special sheets. While buying new decorative pillows will add some color to the dorm room, bringing the student's blankets and comforters from home can help ease homesickness.

    For Fun

    • Music, movies and a TV are a must for most students as a way to relax after long periods of studying. While most computers can play DVDs and store a student's song list, students may still want to watch their favorite television shows. Because life on a college campus can feel shut off from the rest of the world at times, a small TV can connect a student to familiar channels and world events. This is not essential, however.

    For Food

    • Colleges often have strict guidelines for the kind of small electronic appliances allowed in dorm rooms. A small refrigerator and microwave are nearly a necessity for college students and are approved by most schools. These can help save time and money for students who want to eat simple foods like yogurt, juice and frozen meals. Coffee makers are often approved as well and can help the student deal with early morning classes and late night study sessions.

    For Looking Sharp

    • To keep clothes organized, college students need a laundry basket and clothes hangers at the least. Irons and ironing boards are optional and may be restricted by the university. A toiletry tote is also helpful for students who have to use a common bathroom in the hallway. Bath towels and face towels are also a necessity.
