Trimmer Line Installation
While each string trimmer manufacturer uses a unique type of cutting head mechanism, the process for line installation on most is nearly identical. This line must be installed correctly for it to properly feed out line during operation. Though the process of installing line in each trimmer may be similar, most trimmers allow only specific diameters of trimmer line in their spools and cannot be augmented. So you need to refer to your model's user manual to obtain the proper diameter line. Does this Spark an idea?

Removing the Cover
-
Make sure your trimmer is stopped, the ignition switch is in the "Off" position, and the engine is cool before attempting to install new line. This will ensure that you minimize the risks involved with this process. Since most trimmers use a spring for the automatic line feeding system, you also need to wear safety glasses while removing the cover since this spring can fly out unexpectedly. When you remove the cover, hold the spinning part still with one hand while you unscrew the cap or bump knob. Some trimmers may use tabs on the housing area, which you will need to depress simultaneously while lifting the cover off.
Winding the Line
-
Once you've obtained the proper length and diameter of line (these specifications can be found in your operator's manual) you will need to wind this line around a plastic spool. This line needs to be wound tightly and evenly against the spool to come out properly during operation. If the line crisscrosses or is loose, it can jam inside the spool and make trimming difficult or impossible. Hold the line taut while you wind it in the direction indicated on the spool. Place your thumb or a finger between the two lengths of line to keep them separated during winding. (Note: Some trimmers use only one length of line, while many use two.)

Installing the Spool
-
Once you've got the line wrapped around the spool, you need to tuck the ends into the holding slots on the spool. You'll want to keep about 7 inches unwound so you can install the spool properly. If the spring inside the cutting head came out during spool removal, you'll need to reattach it to the head. To get the spool into the housing you may need to push down on the spring while fitting the spool. Continue holding the spool in place with your thumb while you refit the cover.
Other Considerations
-
After you've got the line reinstalled, you'll want to test the function of the head and the cover to ensure they are properly installed. If they are only partially fitted they may fly off during operation and cause injury. Keep all pets and bystanders clear during this entire procedure to ensure their safety.
