Production Planning Objectives
Companies often hire production or project managers to complete individual projects. The act of planning is a necessary skill for production and project managers. The proposal or plan that must be presented to the board of directors often has a set list of objectives that must be met. For production planning, objectives can include internal goals for the business and external goals for clients and customers.

Using Available Resources
-
A business may provide the production manager with a set of resources to complete the planning phase of the production or project. These resources can include software, networking meetings with other companies who can contribute to the project or planning courses for the manager. One production planning objective is to identify the various resources needed to ensure that the planning process is detailed and complete.
Planning and Scheduling
-
Another production planning objective is to create a detailed planning schedule for the entire production of a product or service. A detailed schedule allows the manager to keep track of daily or weekly goals, so he can easily and effectively update the board of directors or the business owner of any progress or updates regarding the production process.

Meet Production Goals and Deadline
-
One of the most common objectives for production planning is to meet the production goals and overall deadline. The business owner or executives may have a desired deadline, so the manager must create a plan to meet this deadline. The executives may also have a set of individual goals that must be met on a weekly basis during the production process. These goals must be incorporated into the plan.
Controlling Costs
-
Once a project or an idea has been decided upon by the board of directors or the business owner, a budget is constructed to complete the project without its costs hurting the business' overall budget. One production planning objective is to control the costs of the project and stay within the budget limits set by the board of directors. Projects can go over budget when unforeseen events happen, such as bad weather conditions or broken equipment.
Customer Satisfaction
-
The customer is an important factor in the production planning stages. The production of the products or services should have the customer as the main focus, as they will be using the products as the end-users. One production planning objective is to test each product before sending it out to be sold.
