Raising children with the confidence and common sense to stay healthy and make good choices isn't easy. The decision making functions of the human brain don't fully mature until after adolescence. Children need to be armed with the right information about drug prevention to stay safe.

The National Institute on Drug Abuse, a division of the National Institute of Health, offers a directory of research-based educational programs that they support in schools and communities across the county, with website contact information. There are a wide range of programs, from those that focus solely on substance prevention to those that teach broader life skills. Many offer publications, informational articles and fact sheets.
First Grade Plus

First Grade Plus offers support materials and a program for primary grade teachers that is designed to make drug abuse prevention principles accessible, digestible and non-threatening to younger children. Educational stories are set in the fictional land of TuckerTown, a home for distressed animals. The program consists of five related stories in which animals confront issues of peer pressure and low self esteem and learn that drugs are not the solution. Free downloads include stories, teaching guides, coloring sheets and discussion guides.

Kidsource Resources

The website Kidsource offers a comprehensive discussion of drug prevention information and a directory of programs and resource materials which includes nine national organizations that provide educational and support materials for parents. Also included is "Growing Up Drug Free: A Parent's Guide To Prevention," an article by Education Secretary Lamar Alexander that offers general and age-specific drug prevention advice.

The international recovery organization Narconon offers a drug prevention education kit for parents along with a selection of books, videos and other educational materials. cafe prevention, a Missouri-based outgrowth of the organization Community Partnership, offers a comprehensive selection of materials on drug abuse prevention as well as materials on health and nutrition, violence prevention and homelessness. Postcards, posters, banners and community tool kits are available focusing on specifics like prescription drug abuse, smoking prevention and teen success.
