Goals help you plan your life and career.

Goal-setting is a key ingredient to success. But while most people have compiled a "to do list" at one time or another, many still fail to see the long-term benefits of setting personal goals. Setting goals is rewarding in multiple ways, whether your goals involve your career, health, finances, personal relationships or other aspects of life.

  1. Planning

    • Goal-setting is necessary to forming a plan to achieve your dreams. When you set goals, particularly in writing, you articulate these ideas and give them a form you can analyze, organize and make plans for. With set goals, you can decide what your priorities are, estimate how long it will take to fulfill them and select appropriate strategies to achieve them. This is virtually impossible to do with hopes and wishes that just whirl in your mind.

    Focus

    • When you set goals, you make a commitment to yourself to fulfill these goals according to the plan you have made. This commitment will compel you to stay focused. If you feel you are always busy yet never get enough done, a written goal plan can change that if you stick with it. You will know what is most important to you, what needs to be done and when.

    Motivation

    • Nothing motivates a person more than evidence of progress. Goal-setting lets you have that. Keep track of all the tasks you have accomplished in connection with your goals. Each task you mark off your goals list as done brings you one step closer to making your dreams come true. When you do this, you see where you are going in life and how much you have achieved. In turn, this will help inspire you to do even better and work harder to attain the rest of your goals.

    Tips

    • Goal-setting is a great tool for achievement when you know how to use it. Be realistic when working out your goal plan. For example, affix a realistic time frame to each goal. Note the means necessary to realize each goal and how you plan to acquire those means. Make separate lists of long-term and short-term goals and prioritize them. And finally, do not forget to reward yourself once in a while for your efforts.
