Ideas for a Wedding Breakfast

Ideas for a Wedding Breakfast thumbnail
A wedding breakfast can serve a variety of purposes and offer fresh, delicious food to your guests.

A wedding breakfast was traditionally the breakfast the day after the wedding. It was an important occasion because it was the bride and groom's first meal together as husband and wife. Today, some couples host a similar event the morning of their wedding as a way of entertaining out-of-town guests. Other couples get married in the morning and serve a breakfast as the wedding meal. Whichever way you treat this tradition, make the decorations and the breakfast food welcoming and special.

  1. Decorations

    • Flowers are a traditional decoration at weddings, and a wedding breakfast is no different. Choose brightly colored flowers to add punch to tables with white linens and dishes, or use pastels or even white flowers for an understated, elegant look. The floral arrangements on the tables should be low, so guests can see over them to talk to one another. If the breakfast you're serving is a buffet, you can choose higher arrangements to accent the buffet tables.

    Beverages

    • Since the breakfast will be served in the morning, you do not need to serve alcohol at the meal. Make sure your guests are offered fresh coffee and tea when they arrive. Have pitchers of water garnished with fruit, and fresh citrus juices as well. If you still want a special occasion drink at the wedding breakfast, you can offer champagne with orange juice or Bloody Marys. Another option is a selection of specialty coffees with liqueurs and whipped cream.

    Appetizers

    • Choose appetizers that are both good looking and good tasting. Platters of fresh fruit and vegetables with dip can be placed on each table to welcome guests so there is food available before the meal officially starts. A cold soup can be an elegant start to a summer or spring wedding. Salads, garnished with fresh fruit and crisp nuts, are a light option as well. Gourmet cheeses with fresh bread and scones are both homey and delicious.

    Main Course

    • The main course for a wedding breakfast could be anything from an egg- or cheese-based dish, such as an omelet or souffle, to seafood or beef. If the meal you're serving is meant to be breakfast, and not your actual wedding meal, a simpler choice is appropriate. You can choose the egg- or cheese-based dish and serve a selection of fresh breads, such as bagels and muffins, along with cream cheese, smoked salmon and fresh preserves. For a wedding meal, the breakfast can be more substantial. Add bacon or ham to a quiche or serve them alongside a souffle, or include a pate or shrimp or lobster salad to have with bread and rolls.

    Desserts

    • Choose a traditional wedding cake for dessert if you wish, but if the breakfast is not your actual wedding, your options are wide open. Fresh fruit with flavored whipped cream is a light and fresh way to end the meal, as is a mousse in elegant pedestal cups. Phyllo pastry desserts are sophisticated and not what people tend to eat all the time, which makes them special. Choose whichever option will appeal to your guests and reflect what you want for your wedding day.
