Literature Fellowships
-
Grants are available for translating written works from other languages to English. According to the National Endowment for the Arts, the Literature Fellowships program offers $25,000 grants in poetry, fiction and creative nonfiction to published creative writers. The program aims to enable writers to have time for writing, research, travel and career advancement. Available in alternating years, the NEA Literature Fellowships program operates on a two-year cycle, with fellowships in prose available one year and poetry the next year.
The NEA also supports projects for the translation of fiction, nonfiction, poetry, or drama from other languages into English. Depending upon the artistic excellence and merit of the project, these grants are for $12,500 or $25,000.
Writers' Emergency Funds
-
Emergency funds assist with medical or financial needs for writers whose primary occupation is writing professionally published work. Self-published authors are not eligible. Pen American Center is a global literary community that offers grants up to $1,000 for emergency purposes to professional writers. Stephen King founded The Haven Foundation, which provides direct financial assistance to people involved in the artistic or entertainment industries. An artist whose income is only 1/3 of his income over the past three years and has suffered a career-threatening emergency may qualify for assistance with the Haven Foundation.

Literary Awards
-
Grants given in a contest type format for written projects are referred to as literary awards or writing contests. Awards given for a specific project must be submitted by a deadline for consideration by the grantor of the prize. Some writing contests may require a nominal entry fee. Pen American Center offered literary awards for 15 literary projects in 2011 that ranged from $2,000 to $25,000. Poets and Writers website has a search with filters that helps refine a search of writing contests, grants and awards.
Funding Your Writing
-
Examine grant opportunities closely to find out if you may qualify for the grant. Research how and why those funding the grant are offering grants, so you may write an effective grant proposal and follow the application process correctly. Clearly articulate your funding needs in a way that substantiates your qualifications. If you are not sure if you are eligible for a grant, contact the grant provider to verify before making a submission. The Foundation Center offers webinars and research tools for grant research.
