North Las Vegas High Schools

North Las Vegas in Nevada is a fairly suburban area with access to common amenities and the occasional casino. As such, it is a typical area for high school students; they can free roam at their own pace and be basically undisturbed by Las Vegas tourists. North Las Vegas has five major high schools and several small specialty schools.

  1. Cheyenne High School

    • Cheyenne High is among the 104 schools in the Clark County district. It is a public school, with about 2,000 ninth- to 12th-grade students. In addition to standard academic courses, Cheyenne offers a variety of foreign language courses, such as French, German, Spanish and Mandarin Chinese. Up to 70 percent of the student population is African-American and Hispanic.

    Legacy High School

    • Legacy, which is also part of the Clark County district, acts as a preparatory high school by helping eighth-graders smooth their transition into high school. Legacy is also a fairly diverse school: Hispanics, African-Americans and Caucasians each comprise 30 percent of the student body; Asia-Pacific students make up the remaining 10 percent. Legacy has a strong focus on athletics; its soccer team successfully won the 2010 state title.

    Rancho High School

    • Rancho High School acts as an upper division middle school in addition to a high school. It has an average student population of 3,500. It is highly active in its charity activities as it frequently runs toy giveaways and book drives to donate to various organizations in Las Vegas. It also has one of the best high school baseball teams; before the 2010 season began, the team was ranked seventh in the United States by Collegiate Baseball News.

    Mojave High School

    • Mojave High School has mostly African-American and Hispanic students, who make up 71 percent of the 2,000-plus student population. Mojave is particularly known for its athletics department; they actively compete in the Nevada Interscholastic Activities Association. Although they offer a variety of sports, such as baseball, golf and wrestling, they are most known for their very successful football team. In 2007, their team ended the season with their best win-lose ratio of 8-3.

    Canyon Springs High School

    • Canyon Springs High School is home to 2,700 students in grades 9 to 12. It is the only school to offer a specialized AP International Diploma program in the Moreno Valley district. Starting with freshman year, the student has to take several advanced international courses to get this diploma. Some of the requirements include mastery of a foreign language and courses in global perspectives in addition to normal AP math and science classes.
