Flower Power
-
A Woodstock look is relaxed and fun for boys. The most easily available bought or rented 60s costumes for kids are flower power and Woodstock outfits, and they are suitable for boys and girls of any age. But despite hundreds of online fancy dress stores, there are only a few different styles on sale. You can dress these to make them look unique by using fresh flowers and feathers. A length or two of wide ribbon turns in to a pretty headband and you can use a regular eye-liner pencil to draw flowers on the child's cheek. Color this in with some kid's face paint sticks or eye shadow.
Fashion
-
Girls can wear adapted styles from popular 60s fashion icons such as Mary Quant and Twiggy. It is easy to capture these looks without wearing too much make-up or high heels. Your child's head may be too small for a regular adult wig but you can use clip in bangs to get a dramatic 60s hair style. Straighten hair with ceramic flat irons and a protector spray. Older girls could wear eye liner, and fake lashes but no other make-up is needed so this look is still just about dressing up. If you don't want to buy an outfit, stick to black and white monochrome. Look for fabric with large squares or circles. Go 60s space age with silver make-up, fabric, shoes or body paint.

Bands
-
Adult 60s band T-shirts make great dresses for girls. Base a hippie flower girl outfit on an over sized t-shirt from the Beatles, Mamas and Papas, Monkees or any iconic 60s band. Team with a pretty headband worn across the brow, feathers, flowers, painted designs on the face, long beads and flip flops. Pull together with a bright colored belt at the waist for a mini-skirted look.
Psychedelic
-
Create an easy psychedelic look with high street staples. Psychedelia is a great look for kids' costumes because it is so much fun; you can just pile on as many bright colors as you can find. Even if you don't get the styles of the era exactly right, this won't matter if you create something dazzling, clashing and super-colorful. If not buying a whole psychedelic costume outfit, look out for tights, cheap plastic shades, jewelery and T-shirts. Or buy old clothes from a thrift store and paint them in psychedelic swirls, with fabric or acrylic paint. Boys could wear an over-sized blazer painted with bright swirls for a homemade Austin Powers look.
